John Barnes Jr.

As a young athlete in B-Buzz Baseball, I experienced firsthand the power of leadership, teamwork and good sportsmanship. The league taught me how to inspire and support my teammates, work together to achieve goals, and respect the game and our opponents. It was a foundation that shaped my character both on and off the field. Keep moving forward.

Mayor of the Village of Woodmere

Mayor Ben Holbert

Growing up, some of my fondest memories revolve around a game that taught me lessons beyond the baseball diamond. That game was Little League baseball, and my team was part of the B-Buzz League.

As the 15th Mayor of the Village of Woodmere, I’ve held many titles, but one of my first and most cherished was “Little Leaguer” after being drafted into the B-Buzz American League in the early 1970s.

Before B-Buzz, I played in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) from 1969 to 1973. Back then, I thought I was a decent ballplayer—until I met my peers at B-Buzz. These kids were sharp and quick, playing at a level that pushed me to grow. It was humbling but fueled my competitive spirit.

During my time with B-Buzz, I earned awards for Most Improved Player, Sportsmanship, and Best Defensive Player. With the guidance of my coaches, especially Coach Jimmie Lake in the Pony League, I learned how to bunt, steal bases confidently, and field ground balls with precision. I wasn’t just learning baseball—I was learning perseverance, discipline, and hard work.

Beyond improving my game, B-Buzz gave me lifelong friendships. Some of the boys I played with later became rivals at Benedictine High School, and those connections later evolved into business partnerships and professional networks. That’s the power of B-Buzz—it’s more than a league; it’s a community.

Today, as a member of the advisory board, I’m proud to continue advocating for the boys and girls who represent B-Buzz’s future. This league has shaped countless lives, teaching teamwork, commitment, and sportsmanship. As long as I have a voice, I’ll always champion B-Buzz’s mission. After all, it’s not just a league—it’s family.
